Hayrettin Köymen

Hayrettin Köymen was born in Ankara in 1952. He received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1973. Köymen received his M.Sc. in the field of Telecommunications in 1976, again from METU and Ph.D. in Underwater Acoustics in 1979, from University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Hayrettin Köymen worked as Assistant Professor in the Institute of Marine Sciences, METU, Mersin, from 1979 to 1983. From 1983 to 1990, he worked in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Dept., METU, Ankara. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 1985 and as professor in 1990. He is serving as a Professor in Bilkent University, Electrical and Electronics Eng. Dept., since 1991. He is chairing Communications and Spectrum Management Research Center (İSYAM) of Bilkent University since 1994.

Hayrettin Köymen participated in scientific and engineering research projects, initially as a researcher and then as project manager. These projects are in a spectrum of fields, including Underwater Acoustics, Oceanographic Instrumentation, Medical Instrumentation, Clinical Engineering, Acoustic Microscopy, Telecommunications and Spectrum Management.

Hayrettin Köymen started up Kardiosis Ltd. Co. in 1988 as one of the two founding partners; to produce PC based electrocardiographs, which are the first PC based ECG systems ever designed. Kardiosis Ltd. Co. ceased its action in 1998 upon transferring its industrial know-how and commercial rights to another company.

Hayrettin Koymen served as a member of Board of Directors of TRT (Turkish Radio and Television) from 1996 to 1999. He also served in various administrative positions and committees in Bilkent University and in METU, and as member in EU Project Management Committees.

Hayrettin Köymen is married to Bike and has two daughters, Gülcan and Itır.
