Short Biography
See this link for full CV.
Dr. Saritas is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. She is currently the Associate Provost of Bilkent University and the Associate Director of the National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM). Prior to joining Bilkent in Sept. 2013, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Deparment of Bioengineering at University of California, Berkeley from Sept. 2010 - Aug. 2013. She received her Ph.D. degree in Jan. 2010 and M.S. degree in June 2004 from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, and her B.S. degree (valedictorian) in June 2002 from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University.
During her postdoctoral research at University of California, Berkeley, she worked with Prof. Steven M. Conolly in Berkeley Imaging Systems Laboratory (BISL) on Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) systems. During her Ph.D. research at Stanford University, she worked on high-resolution diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of targeted regions, under the supervision of Prof. Dwight G. Nishimura at the Magnetic Resonance Systems Research Lab (MRSRL).
Dr. Saritas is the recipient of the Lucent Technologies Stanford Graduate Fellowship, Siebel Stem Cell Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship, the 2015 "Young Scientist Outstanding Achievement Award" (GEBIP) given by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), the 2016 "Young Scientist Award" (BAGEP) given by the Science Academy, Turkey (Bilim Akademisi), the 2017 "Scientist of the Year Award" given by Science Heroes Association (Bilim Kahramanlari Dernegi), the 2019 "Incentive Award" given by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), the 2020 "Research Incentive Award" given by METU Parlar Foundation, and the 2020 "Research Incentive Award" given by IEEE Turkey. She has also received the Distinguished Teaching Award of Bilkent University in 2018.
Dr. Saritas is currently serving as the chair of ISMRM Turkish Chapter, and as the chair of IEEE Turkey Engineering in Medicine and Biology. She is also serving as an Editorial Board Member for the International Journal on Magnetic Particle Imaging (IJMPI). She has previously served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, as an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, and as the chair of IEEE Turkey Section Women in Engineering.
Research
Due to rising life expectancy, a greater portion of the population is bound to experience diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. However, despite great advances in medical imaging, many of these critical diseases remain difficult to diagnose. For example, with over 7.6 million deaths per year, cancer is estimated to soon become the leading cause of death in the world. Despite a worldwide effort to improve diagnostic capabilities for cancer, many patients suffer from needless biopsies and emotional stress as a result of false negatives. Furthermore, cancer patients can waste precious time on a specific type of chemotherapy only to find out that they are unresponsive to that treatment. Clearly, new imaging methods are needed to overcome the critical diagnostic and prognostic challenges of existing modalities.
Dr. Saritas' research focuses on developing novel biomedical imaging techniques, with an emphasis on biological and diagnostic applications. She works on novel contrast methods and high-resolution imaging techniques. Specifically, she conducts research on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic particle imaging (MPI) systems. This includes developing new image acquisition and image reconstruction techniques, as well as clinical implementation and evaluation of these methods. She also investigates the human safety limits of magnetic fields used in medical imaging systems, with the end of goal developing fast imaging methods that abide by these safety considerations.
Dr. Saritas' research is funded by the following organizations:
- TUBITAK (through 1004, 1001, 3501, and 2232 programmes)
- European Commission (through an FP7 Marie Curie Career Integration Grant)
- Era.NET RUS Plus Programme
- Euronanomed III Programme
- Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) (through GEBIP award)
- Science Academy (Bilim Akademisi) (through BAGEP award)
